Last weekend I had the opportunity to go into NYC and help support my niece Melissa, a.k.a. @KyndOMello showcase her talents with her wonderful cake creations and at the same time she performed a public service.
Melissa is an aspiring baker. She acquired her love for baking while working part-time in a small bakery shop in New York City. Her modest but growing clientele include Kim Kardashian; International Latin “DJ” Alex Sensation; and Angela Simmons; owner and designer of “Pastry” shoe/sneaker brand. Through family, friends, “friends of friends” and word of mouth, Melissa is kept very busy with cake, cookie and cupcake orders most weekends.
In order to showcase her “creative cake talent” she held a small fundraiser for AIDS awareness. With the help of her mom- my sister Madeline, her cousin Megan as well as friends, Melissa and the gang worked long hours on Friday and Saturday in preparation for the five hour event scheduled for Sunday, April 14th, 2013.
100% of the profits went towards the awareness of AIDS and possibly finding a cure.
The event was held together by Melissa’s sister, Melanie a.k.a. “DJ KyndO’xclusi1ve”, spinning the vinyl…. uhh… mp3’s all afternoon. Many guests, myself included were tapping their feet to the beat while others were gesturing the “raising of the roof” with their arms. Almost all were singing along or at least lip synching. Melanie is also trying to get her foot into the door in a proffesion heavily dominated by males. I’ll say this about my nieces– they are determined. “Get out of their way or get trampled”.
All in all, the afternoon was a success. Melissa was able to show off her skills with “flour, icing, and an oven. Melanie did her thing with her DJ hardware. Guests had an awesome time buying baked goods and donating money. And most importantly: a good deed was performed in the search for a cure of AIDS.
As I am,
